Summer & Fall Pest Prevention Tips: Help Keep Manchester Clean and Rodent-Free
As we move through the summer months and into the fall, the Town of Manchester is asking residents and businesses to help us stay proactive when it comes to pest control and rodent prevention.
Here are some simple, common-sense practices that make a big impact in keeping our community clean and healthy.
๐งบ Secure Your Trash & Compost
Use sturdy trash cans with tight-fitting lids โ never leave bags on the ground.
Rinse food containers before tossing.
If you compost, use a secure bin and avoid composting meat, dairy, or oily foods.
If dumpsters are used, be sure lids and doors are kept closed at all times.
๐ง Eliminate Water Sources
Rats need water to survive. Remove or drain potential water sources, including:
Birdbaths
Dripping water faucets or hoses
Old tires that can collect rainwater
Outdoor pet bowls when not in use
๐ฎ Donโt Feed the Pests
Avoid leaving pet food, birdseed, or leftover food outdoors.
Feed pets indoors when possible.
Clean up fallen fruits and vegetables from gardens promptly.
Clean up after your pets promptly โ rodents can feed on animal waste.
๐ก Clean Up Around Your Property
Eliminate clutter in yards, garages, and alleyways where rodents can hide.
Keep grass trimmed and remove brush piles.
Seal gaps and holes around your home โ rats can squeeze through openings the size of a quarter.
๐ชค Smart & Safe Rodent Trapping Tips
Use snap traps, glue traps, and/or enclosed bait stations.
Place traps near signs of rodent activity โ look for droppings, gnaw marks, or burrows.
Use bait like peanut butter โ avoid placing traps where children or pets can access them.
Check traps daily โ dispose of captured rodents safely and promptly using gloves and a sealed bag.
For poison or advanced methods, let licensed pest control professionals handle it โ they have the safest and most effective tools for the job.
Seal up entry points once trapping is complete to prevent new rodents from entering.
๐ซ Report Problem Areas
If you notice signs of increased rodent activity (droppings, burrows, chewed materials), we recommend you contact a professional pest control service for treatment.
โ Letโs Work Together
Rodent issues are not caused by any one home, business, or person โ but collective efforts make all the difference. When each property does its part, we create a cleaner, healthier environment for everyone.
